FF: The Ranch Quilt Top.

Two hundred and eleven pieces later, this quilt top is finished. (I love it.)

It's made with a mix of Kona, Bella, and AMB solids. I've worked with both Bella and Kona solids in the past, but this was my first time working with AMB. They were...interesting. Not in a bad way! But they were definitely different from their Kona and Bella counterparts. AMB solids have a high thread count, and they worked fine with Agatha and my Aurifil thread, if I was making a project only using AMB solids, I would switch to a different needle. (For the record, I almost always use an 80/12 Schmetz needle.) I could definitely feel a difference when sewing through them.

Now I'm left with a conundrum...how do I quilt this bad boy?

  1. It's beautiful, Audrey! It's just perfect! As for quilting, my vote would be to quilt it across and down making tiny boxes (is there a name for that?). I seriously love it. Whatever you do with it, it will be great!!

  2. Oh I love how this turned out! I would be so tempted to do some echo quilting of the shapes, but the above suggestion for a grid of vertical and horizontal lines is great, too. Somehow it just seems to be asking for mostly straight lines...

  3. LOVE!!! My first instinct on quilting was to do some sort of box-y free motion echoing around the shapes. But the grid also since cool (and probably faster/easier). :)

  4. This is amazing! I think echo quilting would look fantastic :-)

  5. So gorgeous! You totally worked those people l purples ;) On the quilting, what about something with arrow shapes? Accentuating the diamond shape and southwest style feel I get from the design?

  6. I just pieced my first quilt top with AMB, too. You hit the nail right on the head: it doesn't have the hand of a Bella Solid or a Kona. It's different in a way I can't explain. If you were to do it again, would you go down in needle size, like, to a 10? (I think that's what Hawthorne Threads recommends on its new fabrics, which also have a high thread count.)

  7. Beautiful quilt! I love the colors you chose and the pattern itself.

  8. I love it! I wouldn't go with a grid personally because sometimes I think a very angular and geometric quilt needs something rounder. I like the idea of an all over box pattern like Angela Walters does. I like how you arranged the colors from too to bottom. It's very striking! Oh, and I don't like the AMB solids at all. Glad you do, though! I felt bad seeing as they are made in the USA and all...

  9. Really like this! Did you follow a pattern or is it your own design? I thought there might be more hot pink in it?! As for quilting, I like the idea of the square stippling, geometric meandering as me toned above.
